                    Small business boosted in Melbourne

Media release, Thursday 26 November 2015
A 3D bike printing business, a rooftop futsal centre and a video game development hub are the latest recipients of the City of Melbourne’s Small Business Grants.

Chair of Future Melbourne Economic Development portfolio, Councillor Kevin Louey, said 15 small business grants worth more than $260,000 are being provided to start-ups right through to businesses seeking to expand their operations.

“This vital investment directly supports the future of small business in our city and I am proud to say that we have selected some pretty exciting ventures.

“We anticipate that this round of grants will produce 97 new jobs, $9.6 million in gross turnover and $1 million in equity investment.

“These grants foster innovation, expansion and ultimately productivity that feeds back into our local economy,” Cr Louey said.

There were a total of 129 applications received for this year’s round of grants, vying for a range of grants including start-up, business expansion, export and microbusiness.

Among the 15 recipients are Bastion Cycles which plans to build the world's first 3D printed high performance road bike using titanium and carbon fibre frames. Merging advanced manufacturing, design and retail, Bastion plans to commercialise 3D printing here in Melbourne.

“It is encouraging to see the latest in technology, fashion and design looking to set up in Melbourne alongside traditional businesses with a twist,” said Cr Louey.

“One of the grants will allow CBD FC set up rooftop futsal matches being played with skyscrapers as a backdrop and city workers being able to access more sport in the city.”

Since the program began in 1996, 351 small businesses have been the beneficiaries of $7.5 million in financial support. Previous successful recipients include, Mörk Chocolate, The School of Life, and Gewurzhaus.

The next funding round will open in July 2016.
